The Arctic Cat was around the bend. Bend was figurative. It was really the way the drifts had piled up from the wind. They blocked the sled from view, but she saw snow being tossed up and out.

“Aaron, don’t!” she shouted to distract him from the Arctic Cat.

He whirled around, surprise in his eyes. “I told you to stay put!” He took a step toward her and she lifted her arm and deployed the highly concentrated pepper spray that could stop a grizzly attack in seconds.

Jo had never seen the impact of bear spray on a human being. Doherty fell to his knees with a scream of such pain and agony that for a split second, Jo felt guilty.

The Arctic Cat rounded the drift. She waved frantically, hoping the driver would stop.

Doherty buried his face in the snow, lifted his head. His eyes were red and swollen shut behind his mask. He didn’t have the gun in his hand. He screamed, “Joanna!” Doherty collapsed again in the snow. Was he dead? No, he couldn’t be—bear spray was pepper spray. It was debilitating, but not lethal. Jo watched as Doherty turned his face in the snow. His eyes were closed, his mouth opened and closed as if gasping for breath.

He tried to move but couldn’t. Was he groaning or was that the wind? Jo didn’t wait to find out.

She took the opportunity to get away.

She walked clumsily over a snowdrift, sinking deep, thankful she had on her waterproof mukluk boots that prevented the snow from seeping into her shoes. Still, the cold air was tinged with the spray and she coughed repeatedly as she made her way around where Aaron had collapsed.

The Arctic Cat stopped and the driver sat there. He looked small for Sean Mann. The driver wore a bright blue snowsuit with a fluorescent green strip across the front and back.

Jason.

“Jason? Jason, what are you doing?”

He took off his helmet and ski mask. He looked exactly like a younger version of his father, dark hair a little longer and mussed. He was a handsome boy, and would grow into a fine young man.

“He shot my uncle. I didn’t want him to hurt you too.” He’d saved her life, she was certain.

“You are a brave young man. I am so proud of you.” She kissed him on the cheek. “Put your helmet back on, we have to go. I don’t know how long he’ll be incapacitated.” At least twenty minutes. Probably longer. But she couldn’t let him catch up with her and Jason.

The snow was coming down faster.

She assessed where they were. They could retrace their path and go back to the homestead, about an hour away. Or they could go south and skirt the edge of Upper Red Rock Lake. The problem with that was there were no snowmobile trails on that side of the lake. There were fences and rocks and other
